The new series of the Big Painting Challenge is a fantastic return to form for BBC Sunday evening programming. Ten amateur artists from a variety of backgrounds undertake an intensive, six-week artistic ‘boot camp’ in a bid to perfect their skills and be crowned the overall champion.

From a grade perspective the main objective was to bring together a cohesive, stylish look for the show, which due to the nature of the format, locations and multiple camera set-up was ambitious. There was a lot of material to cover and often in some challenging environments but I’m really happy with the end result. It’s such a great show and leaves you feeling inspired and entertained in equal measure, I’ve even dusted off my old sketch book and pencils after working on the show.

Our biggest achievement for The Big Painting Challenge was bringing the environments and action alive with activity. To make the painting sections punch, all of the paint, brushes, pencils etc were recorded in foley by Laurie Goode, Alex Whybrow and Steve Berezai, which added a zest to the action and pace to the cuts.
